I've tried to theorize this impulse as a "refusal of coevalness." I think anthropologists are often especially bad at dealing with this for reasons that have a lot to do with the way we justify the legitimacy of our methods. But we should take it seriously:

To check students are actually learning along the way, give them weekly one-on-one or two-on-one sessions with tutors where they have to not only submit an essay but defend it in person, again with no computers. Seems simple!
