This jackass continues to disgust me in new and even more outrageous ways every day.

I let her know that I am, and will continue to be OK. And I let her know that my wish for her was to be at peace. I’m told she physically softened as she listened to me and that a smile fell across her face again.

Yesterday, I was put on speaker phone with her. She didn’t say anything to me, but I know she could hear me. I told her how much I loved her and thanked her for all that she has given me in life.

Last week, I spent several days with her sharing memories and showing my appreciation for all she gave me. I played some of her favorite music and danced for her. I made her smile in the presence of the reality she was facing.

She was also my teacher—giving me my love for cooking and my love of language that led me toward writing. Even when life dealt her some blows that took so much of her own freedom away, she showed up for me in this way.

Growing up, Mom often told me, “You can do anything and be anyone you want in life.” She always cheered me on in whatever I pursued. She fueled my creativity and nurtured my curiosity.

I want to crawl back in bed and emerge again once the sun returns!
