I figure if I don't want to brute force with option #1, I could try to get chunky with Gridmap and see if smaller chunks gives it enough of a boost.

There's also MultiMesh, but I haven't used it before. The caveats of it seem concerning.

As this state of affairs means I can’t show a full world view in 3D, I will then provide with a secondary 2D “full map” type thing. This one will probably be a lot more basic and simply use TileMapLayer(s).

I’m actually not using gridmap since it’s a bit cumbersome for my use case. Godot nonetheless batches just fine since I am being careful with material+shader selection. I might bite the bullet and switch over to gridmap or similar later though, even if the implementation would be a little “funny”
