your camera will be able to better than your eyes. Try shooting at the sky and play with the light and exposure to get an idea of what you will see once your eyes adjust.

These pictures show what I saw (night with weak aurora) after 20 minutes. At first all I saw at first was a faint green glow.

We've apparently had the most spectacular lights over us for the past week, but we also have 4 layers of clouds and fog so thick I can barely see the trees in my back yard.
