some years ago, as part of our team’s work addressing racist pseudoscience, my colleagues Stasia (researcher) & Alyssa (graphic designer) put together this infographic to provide some clarity about direct-to-consumer genetic testing. these companies market to particular populations for a reason.

Also, Kayla may upload her results to a genealogy site to find family, unknowingly exposing her family’s similar genetic data to law enforcement or other entities with access to those sites without their consent. The bottom quarter of this flowchart is titled “Outcomes” and highlights that testing companies profit, big pharmaceutical companies profit, individuals pay more, and their data is exploited.
