…headroom is infinite when the top’s back. The less said the better with practicality. K-9 isn’t coming with. But there is no doubting why these cars became a popular import to Britain. As a fashion piece, they’re just about peerless. And if you’d like to see the video, comment ‘FIGARO’ below.

…rarely bestowed on a small car. The switches are metal - styled to reflect the art deco leaves of the bonnet badge. The heater controls are all written out, engraved into the dashboard, rather than depicted as modern pictograms. The teeny turbocharged engine whooshes away in front of you, while…

The last of Nissan’s famous Pike cars, the Figaro must be the definitive JDM cutie. A product of Japan’s bubble economy, the Figaro and its siblings; the Be-1, Pao, and S-Cargo, are far from tarted up K10 Micras. Every interface is radically revised, exhibiting a level of care and attention…

People say that Italian cars of the ‘70s, like the Lancia Beta, rusted due to steel from the USSR. But this is false. Instead, a concoction of design, production, and logistical issues squandered any goodwill their engineering may have mustered. If you’d like to see the video, comment ‘LANCIA’.

Have you put your Christmas lights up yet?

…a standard Fiesta never was, and that’s charming. I can’t pinpoint why this thing is not overwrought, because it is on paper, but maybe that underlying spirit breaks it clear. I drove this car last year, and if you’d like to see the video, then comment ‘FIESTA’ below. (3/3)

…nothing needs a second glance. It’s an industrial product. And to give it a sporting attitude, they’ve tacked on trinkets, and that somehow makes me very happy. There are jazzy seats, decals, spotlamps, spoilers, and beautiful four-spoke alloy wheels. It’s dynamic in a manner… (2/3)

I haven’t always felt this way, but I’ve come to the view that one reason I like old cars is because they don’t often feel overwrought. Take this Fiesta Supersport. Ford’s first supermini is undoubtedly a chiselled, carefully styled thing, but it’s still very simple. Nothing overwhelms… (1/3)

The Jensen Interceptor was brute force in motor car form, but the lesser-spotted FF was far more advanced. With its Ferguson Formula full-time four-wheel-drive, anti-lock brakes, and traction control, it preceded the Audi Quattro by 14 years. If you’d like to see the video, comment ‘JENSEN’ below.

…and many rightly ignore it, but there’s a weight to the air here. History lingers. And though you’d spend no more than twenty minutes on the site, you find yourself tranquil, reflecting, in a way only the quiet French countryside can allow. (3/3)

It’s nearly sixty years since a racing car had its tyres changed in these pits, yet the friends of the circuit have done a remarkable job in preserving and restoring what’s left. It’s a shame that authorities have felt the need to impose a no-stopping zone… (2/2)

Back in April, some friends and I visited Reims-Gueux for the first time. Almost a cliche to visit while driving through France, the fact this place still exists is astounding. (1/3)

13 Bannerman Road is where Sarah Jane Smith lives. It’s also home to the sweetness that is the Nissan Figaro. The last of the famous ‘Pike cars’, you cannot fail to appreciate just how much care they took in creating such an individual small car. If you’d like early access, comment ‘FIGARO’ below.

The Triumph Stag is one of British Leyland’s few shining lights, and though it had issues, the fundamentals were perfect. Gorgeous Michelotti styling and a barking overhead cam V8 ought to have made it a world beater. If you’d like to see the full video, comment ‘STAG’ below.

…carburettor set up properly. Melody may look most of her thirty-eight years, but she certainly doesn’t feel it. A well-tuned Metro 1.3 is no slouch, and handling as it should, they’re such a laugh. (4/4)

Come the summer, however, the gearbox was suffering, so the engine came out for a fresh coat of paint, a rebuilt ‘box, a new oil pump, mounts, exhaust, and rocker cover. Finally, we installed a new steering rack, refreshed the headlamps, had the Hydragas suspension revitalised, and the… (3/4)

Over winter, we replaced the alternator, wheel bearings, front brakes, ball joints, and gave the 1275cc A+ a damn good service. The tarnished pepperpots and incorrect tyres were irking me, so I bought some flashy gold minilites. (2/4)

One year ago this week, I sold Melody, my little Austin Metro donated to Twin-Cam by the most generous subscriber. Back in 2021, she was very tired, yet very happy, and while I pressed her almost immediately into semi-daily use, some serious work was required. (1/4)

The Peugeot 205 GTI is widely regarded as the greatest hot hatch of all time, but why is that? As far as I can see, it comes down to a combination of four factors: style, pedigree, driving pleasure, and dependability. If you’d like to see the full video, comment ‘PEUGEOT’ below.

But with a longer wheelbase and 4” added to the width, the TC felt much more grown up, and the Coke-bottle styling? Well, just look at the thing. Magnificent. If you’d like to see the video, comment ‘CORTINA’ below. (3/3)

Long before Gene Hunt and Sam Tyler began stamping on toys, the 2000 GXL was perched atop the enlarged and now pan-European range, Ford’s new overhead cam Pinto engine matching double wishbone front and all-round coil spring suspension. (2/3)

This car has cropped up in a serious number of my videos, and frankly, how couldn’t it? The Mk3 Ford Cortina is one of the most fashionable mainstream family cars ever to grace British roads, and this is just about the coolest. (1/3)

The Mini is undoubtedly iconic, but in 1960s Britain, our favourite car was instead its big brother, the Pininfarina-styled and fluid-floating Austin-Morris 1100. If you’d like to see the full video, then comment ‘ISSIGONIS’ below.

Radio’s jammed up with talk show stations,
Lost souls calling long distance salvation.
Hey, Mr. DJ, won’t you hear my last prayer?
Hey-ho rock and roll, deliver me from nowhere.

Volkswagen’s image of quality and dependability came entirely from the most popular car the world has ever seen: the beloved Beetle. And best of all, it’s the car that came to stand for personal freedom and expression. If you’d like to see the full video, then comment ‘BEETLE’ below.
