Lots of good signs at the Austin #HandsOff protest today, like this 3D model of a cybertruck driving through the US Constitution

which makes this a great time to reveal the amazing lab conspiracy board that Caitie & Ophelia made for the project and revealed in a very memorable group meeting. Maybe you can recognize some of the central characters? (some more timely than ever, apparently)

My favorite findings so far: Ophelia Papoulas finds the vesicles specifically capture downstream signaling proteins. & strikingly, the tomograms show these cytoplasmic proteins are organized in some yet-to-be-determined fashion. There's a lot more work to do to figure out the details 4/4

It's been remarkable to see the spatial arrangements of individual molecules of EGFR receptor in native cell membranes. It's immediately helping to resolve questions about higher order receptor organization 3/4

Monica Gonzalez-Magaldi in Dan's lab has got the process down for making extracellular vesicles such that the major membrane protein is a receptor of interest, like the insulin receptor or EGFR. This makes it possible to study the receptor's structure/function by cryoET and mass spec. 2/4

I've always especially liked the millions of marine fossils scattered all over the local waterways. So many oysters and clams, Rams Horns and Devil’s Toenails, and, more rarely, sea urchins and ammonites. In places, it's hard to walk without stepping on fossils.

The woods here are mostly wild oaks, pecans, and sycamores, but I came across this lovely cypress tree catching a bit of late afternoon sun

After a long week full of ups (science, my labmates, and colleagues) and downs (US politics), I took a nice hike to relax in some urban woods and creeks hidden in the heart of Austin

Question for the #CryoEM crowd: does anyone happen to recognize this lovely ~10-15nm diameter protein complex we stumbled across while imaging slime mold protein lysate (as one does)?

Oh, I know. Luckily, we'll be able to follow the unfolding insanity with reliable news sources. Did you see today's headlines?
