Yeah, it's interesting. I thought Android was terrible for a long time, but recently got a used Pixel 8 for live captioning. Modern Android is mostly fine overall; I'm curious and sort of looking forward to seeing the new UI in a way that I'm very much not when it comes to liquid glass.

Most of the recent posts review auto-captioning tools, there's also some programming-related stuff. :)

I've been enjoying this series so far, thanks for writing it!

As a note, you might want to update your blog footer - it links to your old Twitter account, and it seems that someone else has taken over that username now. I had to search a bit to find you here.

Yes, below ground is best, as others noted. If you can get under the basement stairs that's often a good place. If you have to shelter, put on closed toe shoes in case you need to walk on debris, and a helmet is a good idea if you have one. Charge your phone ahead of time, just in case.

Interesting article, thanks for linking! Live captioning glasses are a good example here and, as someone who's deaf but not ASL-fluent, are something I've wanted for years. Computer/phone-based live captioning is useful but I hate that it pulls my focus to the screen and away from the person.

I would be interested (as a subscriber) to see some in-depth articles on building product sense, especially when you're coming into a new company/role. Not seeing much in the archive about that offhand; I agree it's important but not always sure where to start.

I worked on one team where the team lead got so annoyed with the (pre-existing) culture of nitpicky reviews over minor things that don't really matter, like alphabetizing parameters or sorting usings in a certain way, that he wrote a Roslyn analyzer to flag them at dev time. This is the way.

This. I'm a huge fan of consistency, and I'm an even bigger fan of not having to think about that, and I consider it an antipattern when PRs descend into nitpicking about formatting.

I am, I have posts in progress on Windows live captions and a few others 🙂

Hmmm. My mom is the family genealogist, I’ll ask her what she knows on that end. I believe my grandfather was from somewhere in southern Ohio and then he and his mother moved north to Findlay when he was young.

It is not a common last name, so I wouldn’t be surprised! 🙂 Do you have any family connections to Ohio?

Agree with your point. I'm a lapsed UMC kid married into a reconstructionist Jewish family; being deaf, Sunday services never clicked for me, but I also want connections; some of the best ones I've had lately were through my wife's temple, and outside the Saturday services I don't regularly attend.

I have family members with ADHD who are on medication ad quite honestly I probably have at least a touch of it myself, so I'm also curious how you manage it without meds.

I make a point of calling this out (in a good way!) when people do this - thanks for adding those captions to your videos! It's much easier to follow than auto captions that tend to be a bit flaky sometimes.

Ah, gotcha! Slight misreading on my part, sorry.

Minor correction: Bernie Moreno didn't replace JD Vance in the senate, he unfortunately defeated Sherrod Brown's re-election bid.

I personally don’t look at stars; I’m more likely to look at release history, last commit, and open/closed issues to get a sense of how actively maintained something is.

As a developer, I’ve found my tech writing degree far more useful than most of my CS classes were, really. Communication is a super power.

I have a pair of the relatively old Logitech C920 ones, the image quality is still decent and they’re plug and play on Windows and Mac. Maybe be worth looking at some of the newer ones like the Brio?
