lol the most popular democratic socialist in America ran on YIMBY because he actually wants more people to live in his city and now you have no job

Dems (elected) fundamentally saw the culture war as a debate over certain policies because they are selected in part for their ability to treat as equally valid all cultures they don't understand (or might otherwise judge).

They should be studying Lincoln who hated slavery but didn't hate rebels

"The news/facebook thinks" is clearly a shorthand for a large group of people. We really do use "thinks" in flexible ways that we used to be able to cleanly tease apart. I agree LLMs crossed a novel threshold for a huge segment of humanity.

Ah yes the greater context of your post. Yeah.

Only counter example I can summon up is: have encountered tons of people who in the past said "google thinks [such and such]". in many cases I wondered if they truly intended to assign thought to machine. Or if it was like "the news thinks [whatever]".

By "got over" do you mean in the sense of "got past the limitation"?

(Bc emotionally a lot of people haven't "gotten over" the capability of facial recognition...)

We have successfully navigated all previous societal degradations, real and imagined, and so we can call all predictions of degradation a "moral panic."

What if television was actually bad for society and we just muscled through?

What if social media is bad for society and we can't push through?

Half of all consumer spending is from the top 10%

A handful of congressmen, sure, the nationally ambitious ones. yeah in the 90s, Congress still passed laws they knew the POTUS would veto.

Yeah, the 50th Senator has a ton of power. The other 98 all know they aren't the 50th.

I overstated the case, it's not for a century. But it's for a generation

The U.S. constitution did assume that "local notables" were a real thing that mattered bc the U.S. constitution assumed states would not be so comprehensively dominated by the federal government as they have been for a long time

States don't matter -> congresspeople don't matter->only POTUS matters

It's not an option for *most* political tendencies outside of extreme crises. Most of the time we can't prove our desired policies are correct. If we could we wouldn't make policy errors. Most issue advocacy is values-driven and we all have different values + weight values differently.
November 28, 2025 at 5:53 PM
YIMBY can do this because the metric being optimized, $/sqft, is dead simple and completely objective and as such is not really vulnerable to relativistic critiques by Groups. And most critically it is a metric people presently care about intensely + for which you can't pick an alternative to chase

If deficit spending actually made a dent in increasing growth, it would be another story, but it never does, it just becomes profit margin. So we invest and accept that people wasting their money is a them problem. I vote straight ticket Dem. Raise my taxes idc I'll get that money back in my 401k
November 28, 2025 at 12:56 PM
zero constituency for this message since idk 2012

Everyone with a healthy time preference, red or blue, is content to invest and let everyone else juice corporate profits by wasting their money

Thats why we now have de facto bipartisan agreement to blow out US deficit. It becomes corporate profits

You misread the post. We did not build 15 coal plants. We kept 15 coal plants running instead of turning them off.

November 27, 2025 at 2:07 AM
Well yeah in your industry there are "rules" and "liability". The rest of us have lawyers to make sure those concepts don't factor into how we do our jobs
November 26, 2025 at 9:06 PM
Correct, before social media won, the social media critics were the person who wants to improve society somewhat, and the social media boosters made the glib response that they also participate in society. The critics lost, and social media power users won at the expense of society.
