If assisted dying became a global norm, a choice taken by many each year, it would represent a profound shift in what it means to be human. It’s a direction we’d be taking as a species, and that deserves far more reflection.

At the same time, I think we mustn’t underestimate the gravity of this decision. While we often focus on the impact on individual lives and stories, I feel there’s been insufficient debate about how this shapes humanity as a whole.

It’s utterly heartbreaking, and I’ve shed many tears listening to those accounts. So I’d vote yes but push for constant review and national conversation about death and life.

Yet, I also know that if I were asked to vote, I’d still vote in favour. The testimony I’ve heard has been deeply moving—stories of loved ones who desperately wished they had the choice, of those who cried out for relief, and the pain of families who watched them suffer.

With rising rates of obesity, diabetes, and pollution-related illnesses, I can’t help but feel that assisted dying lets humanity off the hook for preventing bad deaths in the first place.
