Latest lunch break oil pastel with the reference. I usually avoid structures, but I gave this bridge a shot.

A little project has been good for my soul this week.

Pat attention to what Christian leaders are saying.

Winter oil pastels. At least the ones that turned out decent.

This oil pastel of Lake George, NY was fun to work on.

My white and dark blue sticks were slippery stumps for this one. More pastels are coming in the mail though!

More winter pastels on a snowy day.

Pay attention to the legislation, not just the unhinged stuff.

There was more pink in the sky of the subject but the orange I blended in decided to dominate.

Dry fitting the skee ball target board.

Different versions of the same subject. The sky has a mix of purple and blue and when I ran out of blue I went more purple.

A few pastels that I made during my lunch breaks. They do pile up over time.

Belated but framed gifts.

This Skee ball project has pushed me to the limit of my ability and forced me to learn new things like how to use a circle jig for a router. It takes me much longer than I expect, but there is real progress most days.

Current oil pastel in progress.

Making a simple Skee ball table at home. Did not anticipate how much dust the router would create!

Trying some mini oil pastels for winter.

I copied a more detailed pastel and made a looser oil pastel version. The line between sloppy and loose isn’t always easy to find.

One of the challenges of oil pastel landscapes is the moment when you realize you’ve represented the clouds pretty accurately, but you need to add a little something to give them more depth… and you aren’t sure what that something is.

I’m perhaps a little extra, but I try to plan a little bit for my time off. Making some time for art, prayer, a walk, a woodworking project, or whatever else can be tricky with so much to do and so many distractions available. I keep my art up at home and work as a reminder of what I love.

The funny thing about learning oil pastels is that I realized I needed to learn how to draw first. So I did a lot of landscapes to practice distance and perspective. I also hate drawing rocks. So this one has it all.

This oil pastel from a few years ago isn’t my favorite, and I can see a lot I’d want to improve, but I was learning to play with light and shadows on snow. It was a step forward, and I keep it up on my wall at work as a reminder to stretch myself, even if pastels are just for fun.

I made this sunflowers few years ago by following a YouTube tutorial for cray pas pastels. I don’t think I could have come close to making this without a little direction.
