Lover of cities, particularly Barcelona (he, him)
In civilized countries a license can be treated like a grave responsibility that not everyone gets. Oldsters can give it up without feeling like it's a sacrifice. Drunks can be denied without ruining their lives. Spain is such a 'civilized' country, with the same population density as California.

2/ The fact that there are few good options other than driving is why we have so many bad drivers on the road. They took my mom's license away about 5-10 years after they should have, and she felt like her life was over. Judges let drunks keep their license because it's a 'necessity.' Insanity!!

Maybe I should say that nobody should be required to drive. It's screwed up that our cities sprawl, public transit sucks, and pedestrians and bikes are poorly accommodated. But at least there's Uber. This is very bad for the substantial portion of the population who can not drive.

Nobody needs to drive (except if it's your job, I guess.) 40,000 People a year are killed by drivers in the US. Many times that many are gravely injured. The vast majority of that carnage is at the hands of people who are deemed to be fit to drive. It's fucked up that our society normalizes this.

They spent a fortune building an underground freeway while their public transit is underdeveloped. Hmmm... maybe there's a connection?

And he's too old to be driving! Folks in their 80s should NOT be behind the wheel!!

Totally agree about advocating for safety, but for some reason I see almost as much advocacy around the miniscule problem as I see about the massive problem.
Drive carefully!!

Amazing growth of solar!!

Drivers often think it's ok to block the bike lane, but not ok to block the car lane. They need to make the fines for bus and bike lanes 10x the fine for car lanes.

You can tell it's a high quality source when it puts anecdotes over data!!

I'm all for road safety. Which is why I hate how much attention is given to the perils of e-bikes. About 40,000 people are killed by cars every year in the US. About 500 are killed in bike accidents. That's 100 to 1. Bike accidents generally harm the biker, cars often kill others.

I stopped reading when, in the first paragraph, they got basic facts wrong, apparently confusing market share with EVs as a percentage of the existing fleet.

In my estimation it looks really attractive. To each their own, I guess.

I liked that video too, but he missed one other good reason to keep those American Behemoths off our streets: they take up too much space! Especially on streets where bikes have to share with cars. They're too wide to fit in parking and they're too wide to get around and to tall to see over.

Great book! There's already a movie based on Robert Moses called 'Motherless Brooklyn'. But oddly, all the characters have alternative names. So you just have to guess a little who's who.

Not so long ago the idea that Brazil might have more robust democratic institutions than the US would have seemed impossible!

If that barrier were moved over to between the bike path and the car lane it would protect cyclists AND slow down the traffic.
Win-win!

It's nuts! The driver brings the possibility of death and injury to the situation, not the pedestrian. Yet it's the pedestrian that gets blamed. If you're piloting a two ton death machine, you have a much greater responsibility. But, obviously, the police don't see it that way.

I'm all for more, better and cheaper housing options, but giving artists a preference over other worthy people is a bad idea. Making an artists ghetto is also questionable urbanism.
November 22, 2025 at 2:27 AM
It's pure car-normalizing insanity! How many people are killed or seriously injured by or in automobiles compared to micro electrics? It must be about 1000 to 1. Long before you license micro electrics you need to be lowering speed limits and applying serious penalties to drivers who kill or drink.

Did you block me for disagreeing with you? really?? Wow! I hope it's just a mistake.
