This dynamic leads right back to Budanov: to confront Zelensky with a set of circles that are almost impossible to square - within a context where Zelensky feels he has no allies anywhere.

Of course, the so-called 'peace agreement' isn't a done deal. Ukraine's military has a half-million reasons to not accept it. If Zelensky bends - he's gone anyway.

Budanov certainly has mortal enemies within the Ukrainian military but he has a resumé of results. He also has a better chance to straddle the bloodthirsty-genteel gap than the business types and apparatchiks that populate the current government.

It's possible the Ukrainians would accept a cease fire w/ Russia b/c it would offer the chance for Kyiv to hold elections and move on from Zelensky.
Who would replace him? Someone bloodthirsty enough to be acceptable to the military but genteel enough to appease war weary Ukrainians.
