a specter is haunting the libs of bluesky, the specter of anarchism

i wouldn't say they're a major influence on a large section of the far-right, but they're certainly one of the most vile manifestations

i think it was mostly him being an Anglican tbh. weirdly i've heard that he was actually somewhat against colonialism in the Americas but i'd need to look into that

oh also Malthus himself wasn't basing it on genetics because genetics wasn't, like, a thing that was known about yet
November 16, 2025 at 7:03 AM
Certainly there was plenty of that too!

Which isn't to say of course that I disagree that some "criminals" have done genuinely horrendous stuff, nor do I disagree with the notion that this is socially produced. But there certainly is a very specific moral framing that is... of its time, I'd say.
November 16, 2025 at 6:55 AM
Yeah, this wasn't that uncommon. Even Kropotkin, who I actually admire a lot for his abolitionist framing of the "problem of crime," still viewed (some) "criminals" as wretched and ill.

To be clear, I have no interest in saying no one should read Emma Goldman lol. She's long dead and I think there's a lot of great stuff there. But anarchism has had an uncomfortable history with disability, which is something I'm slowly researching for an eventual book.

I don't know if Goldman used the term neo-Malthusianism herself, but her support for birth control (in an often eugenicist framing) doesn't mean she was pro-Malthus.
November 16, 2025 at 6:50 AM
I don't think this is contradictory. (Some) French anarchists supported "neo-Malthusianism" both for feminist reasons but also to avoid supplying the French government with war fodder. >

This is pretty common for the time, which isn't to excuse it but to say it makes sense historically. Margaret Sanger, obviously, comes to mind, but so does Marie Stopes. And a number of interwar French anarchists who supported "neo-Malthusianism" (birth control) also supported "voluntary" eugenics.

Also, this passage from Carla C. Hustak's article Saving Civilization from the "'Green-Eyed' Monster". Note that by "the race" she is referring to the human race, though that isn't to say the rest of the language isn't racialized.

nah she was a eugenicist. which was certainly not uncommon for feminists of the time, or even some anarchists, but still
November 16, 2025 at 6:25 AM
i have beef with goldman but also when she goes hard she goes *hard*
November 16, 2025 at 6:22 AM
though any sources you recommend on proto-anarchism and proto-socialism i'd much appreciate, i'm pretty woeful on much anarchist history and am trying to educate myself further (for both my own work and also general knowledge)
November 16, 2025 at 6:13 AM
oh for sure, i'm moreso referring to stuff like Kropotkin drawing on Adam Smith's Theory of Moral Sentiments and such
November 16, 2025 at 6:12 AM
i have a theory that most of the bad stuff about much of (especially so-called "classical") anarchism is that it was an offshoot from liberalism, much in the way Marxism was. it's exciting seeing people try to develop an anarchism from first principles or otherwise far different traditions
November 16, 2025 at 6:01 AM
like i do know a few liberals who genuinely mean well when they harkon back to a philosophical tradition but like. Man.
