He/Him, 26, wizard.
ECORISC CDT PhD student at the University of Sheffield studying a potential re-emergence of chemically induced eggshell thinning in birds.
6/6. Where do we go from here?
Further investigation, especially into exposure to modern
contaminants is required.
Monitoring wild populations should be prioritised, screening of chemicals should be improved & carried out before approval for use.
The effects of chemical mixtures are still unclear.

5/6. We found high confidence that DDT causes eggshell thinning & at least some
evidence that all investigated contaminants bar PFAS can cause EST.
Endocrine disruption is more investigated than eggshell thinning.
Papers on EST are more observational whereas ED are more experimental

Investigated 6 contaminants for 2 toxic effects; Eggshell thinning (EST) & endocrine
disruption (ED)
Retrieved 3,195 papers
Applied systematic selection criteria
Produced confidence assessments for each contaminant & toxic effect
Identified studies types of retained papers

3/6. We are now producing more chemicals than ever before. At the same
time, “legacy” pollutants remain in the environment despite ceasing production due to their persistence. We investigated the literature to determine whether 6 focal
pollutants have a potential to cause eggshell thinning.

2/6. Historic eggshell thinning, attributed to the pesticide DDT, and caused increased reproductive failure as eggs were crushed or failed to hatch. This contributed to population declines in many species and several mechanisms have been put forward by which pollutants might cause this.

1/6. Are modern contaminants causing eggshell thinning in birds? In the first chapter
of my PhD I have completed a systematic review evaluating whether 6 contaminants
cause eggshell thinning by assessing the volume of & agreement in the literature.

Some really lovely news this afternoon, I’ll be speaking the SETAC Europe annual meeting in May!
