The film is a pre-Code science fiction horror film directed by James Whale, produced by Carl Laemmle Jr., and adapted from a 1927 play by Peggy Webling, (which in turn was based on Mary Shelley's 1818 novel 𝘍𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘬𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘪𝘯; or, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘔𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘯 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘶𝘴). The Webling play was adapted by John L. Balderston and the screenplay written by Francis Edward Faragoh and Garrett Fort, with uncredited contributions from Robert Florey and John Russell. Karloff was the first actor to portray the monster in a feature film, a role he reprised in sequels like 𝘉𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘍𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘬𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘪𝘯 (1935) and 𝘚𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘍𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘬𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘪𝘯 (1939). In the film, the creature was created by Dr. Henry Frankenstein, who assembled a living being from the body parts of deceased individuals and brought it to life using electricity. The monster's distinctive makeup was designed by legendary makeup artist Jack Pierce. In the original film's opening credits, Karloff was listed as "?" to keep the monster's identity a mystery until the end credits.
