Literally the only things keeping the US economy from collapsing are (1) public & household debt and (2) social welfare/entitlement programs. If even one of these goes away, the entire system ends.

we had a whole debate on this in the 1860s and ended up bayoneting to death the people who thought that some classes of people did not deserve equality before the law.
