Canada’s constitutional/legal framework make cities, even ones with populations greater than many Provinces, subordinate creatures of Provincial governments - they are prisoners of a political arrangement designed for the late 19th century.

Fair. Can we agree that was mostly Great Britain’s doing? If you guys had gone and invaded Ireland or Penzance, I’d have been fine with that.
September 5, 2025 at 9:00 PM
Your war aim was to conquer us; you guys did not achieve that. Our aim was to stay unconquered. We definitely achieved our goal. Wasteful and horrible? Yes. Did we start it? No.

You were on the winning side, having joined in the late innings. US contribution was significant (certainly for the USA) and the sacrifices were real. Saying the USA won that war is a bit of stretch. Canada was in it from the beginning (as was Newfoundland - autonomous)

I guarantee you that those of on the British North American side feel you lost because we fought harder/better. We got screwed in the Peace by Great Britain. Burning one of our towns was not the least bit wokey. Neither was us burning Washington, to be honest.

We’ll give you a boatload of our Trump adjacent folks for Kreis, Vladek and Joh. Plus draft picks and a bucket of balls.

If I am not mistaken, the strategic objective of your monarch…sorry…President…is to steal parts of our entire economy and possibly our sovereignty. We’ve loaned you tonnes of Canadians.
August 13, 2025 at 8:17 PM
Bonus: we have a super complex constitutional framework, but a non-partisan judiciary. Ok the weather is iffy but check out our west coast.
August 13, 2025 at 8:14 PM
You guys started it with the 51st state and the trade war; we have a system where our monarch is restrained, contained, and maintained. And he can move to Canada tariff free. 🤣
August 13, 2025 at 8:11 PM
If functional constitutional monarchies are your new happy place, consider Canada. 🤣

Did she bound or was she pushed? A lot of people are asking!

My best guess: pure mischief if not malice. Lots of stories abound of people throwing things at cyclists from their cars (batteries, bottles, etc.). This was a first for me (and scissors were quite unexpected).

It was a terrible experience; mainly for what *could have* happened. #ottbike

The #NCC politicians and Mayor #Sutcliffe ought to face more questions but MUPs and related cycling, pedestrian infrastructure is a low priority at council, in the media and, frankly, the citizenry.
May 13, 2025 at 2:17 PM
If roads were operated like MUPs cars would have to coexist with pedestrians, motorized wheelchairs, pets, etc. Every year portions of the road would be submerged in water, unstable/unsafe, or just blocked by construction. Infrastructure for people, bikes is *always* the lowest priority. #Ottbike
May 13, 2025 at 2:13 PM
It would be revealing to put officials in charge of MUPs under a spotlight - get them to answer questions about their decisions and choices - and (sorry to repeat) the investments. Start with political layer first. Picking on the civil servants only will miss the point (accountability) #ottbike

The Mayor (Sutcliffe) has never met a car/truck he wasn’t dedicated to serving. The NCC (political appointees) are an interesting collection of folks - their concern for Ottawa is questionable. But both talk up what a great place the NCR is for cyclists. I’ve never seen a serious study of investment
May 13, 2025 at 1:52 PM
In Ottawa, @en.ottawa.ca and the NCC talk up the bike friendliness of the NCR (for tourism promotion) but in reality they underperform. If roads were operated and maintained the way “multi-user” paths were car drivers would storm City Hall and NCC HQ!
