Permafrost in the Arctic is estimated to hold nearly twice as much carbon as exists in the atmosphere now, as well as a sizable amount of methane. Now, it's thawing – and releasing greenhouse gases.

For the first time, renewable energy has overtaken coal as the primary source of electricity around the world. While countries around the world are shifting away from harmful fossil fuels, the Trump administration is trying to bail out coal while halting clean energy.

As the Trump administration and its allies in Congress seek to revive the coal industry, Earthjustice and the Northern Cheyenne are prepared to fight back.

The Tribe is focused on renewable energy and is developing solar to power more than 100 homes.
October 14, 2025 at 12:42 AM
The Tribe celebrated in 2024 when the Interior Department halted new coal leasing in the region, citing dwindling demand and the growing climate crisis.

But now the Trump Administration and its allies in Congress are reopening the Powder River Basin to new coal leasing.
October 14, 2025 at 12:42 AM
For decades, the Tribe has successfully fought to keep coal development off the reservation, although the nearby Colstrip coal plant has polluted the community's air, water, and soil.

One in four New Yorkers live within half a mile of a warehouse. While disadvantaged communities make up about 8% of the state, they contain 50% of warehouses.

The Clean Deliveries Act would require the state to review proposed warehouses and implement air pollution safeguards for the warehouses.

The Trump administration wants to mine at the doorstep of the Boundary Waters. Twin Metals, owned by a Chilean mining company, wants to build a copper-nickel sulfide-ore mine immediately upstream of the Boundary Waters.
October 9, 2025 at 8:30 PM
NEW: The Trump administration has signaled its intent to withdraw a 20-year mining ban and reinstate leases for the Twin Metals mine in Minnesota's cherished Boundary Waters watershed.

Earthjustice President @abbiedillen.bsky.social on the Endangerment Finding repeal: “How is it possible that the EPA is telling us that we aren’t endangered now? To observe the pain that millions of Americans are suffering and officially shrug it off — well, it’s an epic level of gaslighting.”
July 30, 2025 at 9:49 PM
Today, the Trump admin announced its decision to repeal the endangerment finding – the single most important provision authorizing the US government to regulate greenhouse-gas emissions and fight climate change. This unprecedented decision is reckless, detached from reality, and will cost lives.
July 29, 2025 at 5:38 PM
As fires, floods and droughts destroy communities across the country, the Trump admin is working to undermine the court-affirmed scientific determination that allows EPA to regulate the harmful greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to the intensity and frequency of these extreme weather events.

The conditions around BP's new proposed project, Kaskida, could make it more dangerous than Deepwater Horizon. BP’s Deepwater Horizon disaster spilled 4.9 million barrels of oil. Kaskida would be in greater depths, where equipment would have to withstand higher pressures and temperatures.

Supporters of the Roadless Rule rollback claim it’s about wildfire prevention, but the reality is that this “solution” will only lead to more wildfires. A study found over 90% of wildfires begin within half a mile of a road. Rolling back protections won’t stop wildfires. It will make them worse.

Earthjustice is proud to stand with our partners in Florida who are fighting back against the Trump admin, including @biologicaldiversity.org and @foreverglades.bsky.social‬. We are representing @foreverglades.bsky.social as they sue to stop construction of the detention center in the Everglades.
July 10, 2025 at 2:28 PM
The proposed rollback of the Roadless Rule aims to reopen protected forests to logging and industrial development. It follows recent efforts to expand logging and drilling on public lands. This would worsen climate change, increase wildfire risk, and threaten wildlife, recreation, and clean water.

House Reps need to hear from constituents today! Stop the budget bill that will give industries unfettered access to drilling, mining, and logging on our cherished public lands. This bill will devastate the environment and cause tremendous harm to the health of vulnerable communities.
July 2, 2025 at 8:15 PM
Senate Republicans ignored public outcry from constituents and passed a bill that will devastate our public lands and waters, harm vulnerable communities, and stifle our clean energy transition. As a result, we’ll face higher energy prices and increased harms to our health.

Farmworker and public health groups, represented by Earthjustice, are suing the EPA for failing to act on a petition to ban organophosphate pesticides—a class of harmful chemicals used on many fruits and vegetables, including berries, citrus, peaches, tomatoes, and broccoli.

About 350 nonprofits, Tribes and local governments were awarded EPA grants mandated by Congress to clean up air pollution, fight climate impacts, and protect public health. The Trump admin unlawfully terminated the grant program.

Now, we're representing grantees in our first class action lawsuit.

BREAKING: Trump's USDA just announced plans to repeal the Roadless Rule, a longstanding policy that has long protected National Forests from logging and harmful road building.

The movement to protect our public lands gained tremendous momentum over the weekend, with both Senators from Idaho (R) coming out against the sell-offs. Across party lines, the public outcry is getting louder each day.
