I think he might have been inspired by geological illustrations of the "ideal cross-section of the Earth", which seems to have been common in 19th century Germany. This interpretation also aligns better with what Marx actually does in Capital. 2/5

In Capital vol. 3, Marx writes that he wants to examine capitalism in its "idealen Durchschnitt." This is usually translated as "ideal average," but I believe a more accurate translation would be "ideal cross-section." I think this is a geological metaphor rather than a mathematical one. 1/5

From Dean’s Mother Goose Book of Rhymes, illustrated by Janet Grahame Johnstone and Ann Grahame Johnstone. This book was published in 1977 but it was a compilation of several volumes from throughout the 70s.
