Me too!

Things could’ve gone much differently. I am ok. Possessions can be replaced. But that sense of security I had in my own home is gone, at least for now.
2 days before Christmas 🎄

I confronted them. One ran out the back door. Two ran out the front door as their getaway car raced to pick them up. I followed out the front and got a photo of the car. They had duct taped half of their license plate.

I hate she learned this lesson so young. Cops shouldn’t lie to kids!!

Remind the people you love: Do not talk to the police, especially if you’re innocent. 😇

Of course the whole situation is unfortunate but we are proud of how she handled herself throughout the whole incident.

She protected herself, just like she was taught.

We talked about adrenaline and how your body changes during a fight. I explained it would take a few hours to feel normal

Why not keep her on scene until you spoke to the witnesses? Instead, this cop was pissed off a child knew her rights and decided to haul her in.

Thankfully, that meant a different cop went to the scene and got the facts.

And she got to go home, scared we would be mad & worried her life was over

She knew the cop lied to her when he said she had to talk. He was hoping she didn’t know better.

She knew the cop lied to her when he said “if you just tell me what happened, I’ll let you go” it was a lie to get her to talk.

And the flip side of that, so you arrested her because she didn’t talk?

So they declined to move forward with 3rd degree assault charges against my 13 year old. And I am thankful for that.

The whole situation was unfortunate and the other girl really did find out that day.

But the saddest part is my daughter knows first hand why I taught her to remain silent.

D: Silence

She sat in silence for about 10 minutes until dad arrived. Then she told the police those girls wouldn’t leave her alone, she tried to get away, and when it was obvious she couldn’t she defended herself. And that’s exactly what they heard from the witnesses.

She remembers. Stay silent.

So of course the cop starts asking her what happened?

D: Silence

C: Are you going to say anything?

D: I have the right to remain silent. I don’t have to talk to you.

C: Yes, you do.

D: Silence

C: All you have to do is tell me what happened and I’ll let you go

Meanwhile, the girl runs home crying to her mother. The mother drives around looking for my daughter.

When she can’t find her, she calls the police. The girl points out my daughter. The girl is clearly injured so my daughter is handcuffed and put in the back of the cop car.

So my 13 year old stood there and said fine, if you want to fight me, let’s go.

She walked up to the girl and punched her right in the jaw. Then hit her with a few more punches until the girl asked to stop. My daughter stopped and walked away, with her friend back to the friend’s house.

My daughter and her friend were walking in the neighborhood and another girl started accusing my daughter of talking about her friend. My child didn’t know either girl. My daughter tried to deescalate, walk away, and get out of the situation. But it became clear these girls were looking for a fight

All they had was the complaint’s story and it turns out, her refusal to talk made the police go to the scene and question witnesses to determine what happened. Once her dad arrived, she told her side of the story and they let her go without charges.

So how did we get here?
