It's an odd feeling, reading Countee Cullen so skilfully adapt the language, rhythm and theme of AE Housman in such a different context.

Here we have Adam & Eve (no fig leaves here) formed by God's shaping hand. See the delicacy of the thumbnails, and the way Adam's foot overlaps the ledge. 2/17

Inset into the arch are a series of carvings that tell stories from Genesis. This gorgeously abstract beginning is God staying 'Let there be light!' and dividing the waters from the waters.
Keep and eye on the hand--we're going to see more of it.

One of my favourite pieces of artwork is overlooked by almost every visitor to York Minster. This is the main gate at the West end of the cathedral. It's never used, so hardly anyone comes close to look at the carvings. 1/17

The hallucinatory levels of detail in this picture gives me 'count the fingers' type AI vibes, but it was painted in 1758 by Paolo Panini, which is mind-boggling.
