The trouble with talking about the abundance movement is that it’s quite hard to pin down what exactly it is. There’s Paul Williams who basically says that abundance is just an amalgamation of local YIMBY movements, which leads to the counterintuitive position (made at roughly the 1 hour 52 minute mark) that people like Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson aren’t really part of the movement, despite being the most prominent public representatives of the faction’s brand. Amusingly, when I was searching for where Williams said that, Google’s AI told me “No, Paul Williams is not in the abundance movement, but Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson are two of its most prominent proponents.” (For what it’s worth, I truly wish that we lived in a world where we had an abundance movement that matches what people like Williams and Ned Resnikoff mean, rather than a bundling of YIMBYism with clearing a path for AI data centers—which is explicitly cited as an objective by the Inclusive Abundance Initiative—and abetting fossil fuel expansion. Oh well.)

Interestingly, this was a problem Ezra Klein paid lip service to the next day but didn't really tackle. That column basically sums it up as AI technically doesn't have to be an environmental disaster, making the subtext that the issue isn't AI per se

Then there’s the energy demand. To build the A.I. future that these companies and their investors are envisioning requires a profusion of data centers gulping down almost unimaginable quantities of electricity — by 2030, data centers alone will consume more energy than all of Japan does now. If we had spent the last three decades pricing carbon and building the clean energy infrastructure we needed, then accommodating that growth would be straightforward. That, after all, is the point of abundant energy. It makes new technologies possible, and not just A.I.: desalination on a mass scale, lab-grown meat that could ease the pressure on both animals and land, direct air capture to begin to draw down the carbon in the atmosphere, cleaner and faster transport across both air and sea. The point of our energy policy should not be to use less energy. The point of our energy policy should be to make clean energy so — ahem — abundant that we can use much more of it and do much more with it. But President Trump is waging a war against clean energy, gutting the Biden-era policies that were supporting the build-out of solar, wind and battery infrastructure. There’s something almost comically grim about powering something as futuristic as A.I. off something as archaic as coal or untreated methane gas. That, however, is a political choice we are making as a country. It’s not intrinsic to A.I. as a technology.

All for building out more housing stock and making denser, more walkable cities. Totally against some of the more pro-AI and tech accelerationist stuff.
