One B-24 of the 13th Air Force called The Blessed Event was hit by shells from Japanese fighters, knocking out the engine controls and smashing the instrument panel. The pilot, copilot, bombadier, and nose gunner were all wounded-but the Blessed Event pushed on to Rabaul despite further hits which killed the navigator and wounded the top turret gunner, who nevertheless continued to fire, helping to shoot down at least three Japanese planes. The Blessed Event headed homeward with one rudder missing and streams of gasoline pouring from more than 120 bullet- and shell holes in the wings and fuselage. Guided by its wounded pilot, the B-24 collided with a fighter while making an emergency landing; it lost one of its wheels but managed to glide to safety on its belly: one crewman was dead, one dying, and eight were wounded. 69
