POD seating here can work because it inhibits conversation as long as the sight lines are good. #libraries

These mezzanine structures from the 50’s to 70’s are challenging because the lower bookshelves are integrated with the support structure for the platform and cannot easily be removed. The shelves on top can come off, but sound transmits easily, so an active zone won’t work. #libraries

3/3 … in a lower budget, power stations commonly used for camping can be employed for library use and charged overnight although they may need to be secured for both theft and safety reasons. END #libraries

2/3 … fortunately, advances in battery technology and mobile electronics offer an option. This Steelcase Flex Mobile Power System can recharge phones and laptops, then wirelessly recharge overnight on a cart. The proprietary recharging system discourages theft. #libraries

A 🧵 on power. Many libraries are built directly on concrete slabs with no space between the flooring and the concrete. While this has construction and durability advantages, it can be difficult and expensive to add electrical lines. This make it difficult to reorganize space. 1/3 #libraries

3/3 … instead of continuing to promote legacy media, libraries should embrace teaching seniors, low income patrons and others to download and use online resources. This is part of a critical cultural skillset that will allow them access to much more than movies and music. End. #libraries

2/3 DVDs fall into the same category, though the runway to obsolescence is slightly longer.

The digital divide in America has become a data divide. 95% of Americans own smartphones but many lack access to mobile data. Library resources like Libby allow patrons to download music and movies …

🧵It is time to sunset legacy media like CDs and CD Audiobooks. In the near future, patrons may find it difficult to repair or replace players.

While access to legacy media is sometimes represented as an socioeconomic issue, it is more of an educational barrier that libraries can help surmount… 1/3

5/5 Second, despite moving the collection, there has been no decline in YA circulation. Display drives circulation, not spine-out shelves. End. #libraries
December 7, 2024 at 4:01 PM
4/5 This quick refresh of the space took away the stacks without adding display or more seating (both coming). But two changes are apparent: first, seating is less jammed, so more teens use the space. #libraries
December 7, 2024 at 3:59 PM
3/5 here is the same space approaching peak use. The teens are almost on top of each other. There is no room for discrete neighborhoods, so some groups of teens opt out and end up in less ideal areas of the library. #libraries
December 7, 2024 at 3:56 PM
2/5 … the first problem is intrusions. In the post-Twilight era, adults regularly read YA titles. So putting them in a teen room invites adults into that space. #libraries
December 7, 2024 at 3:51 PM
🧵Shelving the YA collection in the teen room can create a couple of different issues. This is the teen room from the Warren Newport Public Library in Gurnee, IL #libraries 1/5

2/2 … so even though the Rule of Three suggests that three items in a horizontal space will be the most effective for merchandising, this will not be true if the space is too small. Instead of squeezing the items or displaying two, use one. This gives your vision a central focal point. #libraries
December 6, 2024 at 12:05 PM
🧵 on merchandising in tight spaces. Sometimes a display is not really wide enough to accommodate three items. This display looks cramped and is hard to browse. 1/2. #libraries #merchandising

It is easy to overdo displays on the top of low shelves, particularly in children’s rooms. Treat shelf-toppers like any other display: follow the rule of 3 and don’t get too happy with plush toys 🥳 #libraries
