“But when they said, ‘Give us a king to lead us,’ this displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the Lord. And the Lord told him: ‘Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king.’” (1 Samuel 8:6-7, NIV)

(3/3) So if you see anybody who is "boastful", "proud", "lovers of money", or any of the rest, and who also claim to be Christian, beware of such people. The terrible times will come from our own house, not from foreigners or from non-Christians.

(2/3) "treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people." - 2 Tim. 3:1-5

Note that these people who are like this will have "a form of godliness" - they'll claim to be Christians.

I say you will reject regardless. For anything the church may have done to you to cause this anger, I am truly sorry. As much as you may not believe it, not all Christians are like that. I hope life goes well for you, and I hope you keep up the fight against Trump and his cronies. I will as well.

I understand the pain that the church can cause, and how that can lead people into hatred of the entire religion. You've got a lot of anger here, and seem more interested in venting than in having a discussion. I get it, really. I likely won't respond any further, though, as anything

“Working to establish the empire of a God who committed mass genocide” is indicative not of a problem with Jesus, but with the Old Testament, which is a difficult topic, not something that will fit in 300 characters.

“The rape of Jezebel and the murder of her children” likely refers to Revelation 2, which is a book rife with all sorts of non-literal symbolic language. Jezebel likely is symbolic of false teachers leading Israel astray, and God's eventual judgement of those who lead others into evil behavior.

“Describing how he planned to have his angels burn people alive” I'm assuming is in reference to Matthew 13:41-42, which is part of a parable which is by definition not literal. It is symbolic language to communicate how bad a spiritual reality of rejecting God is. There is no literal fire.
January 25, 2025 at 4:40 PM
“Telling his followers to hate others” was already addressed, and you just assume I'm twisting his words by trying to read the context around it and understand that not everything is meant to be super literal. It is about priority, not literal hate.

Admitting up front that you are not interested in dialog, and are instead just trying to bash me with Scripture and not care what I say in response is full of all sorts of irony given your aversion to Christians who often behave exactly the same way. Regardless, for the curious, I'll make a go of it

What evil things did Jesus say?

ever got mad at religious hypocrisy and holier-than-thou behavior, and use that context and the direct context of this passage to correctly understand what he meant by this. I strive not to take a single verse and make my entire case off of that, but instead take it in context. (3/3)

For example, Trump lies pretty much constantly, and spews hatred and bigotry left and right; so I can take that and correctly evaluate what Trump says in a negative light. Likewise, I look at the entire body of Jesus' teaching, which teaches love and acceptance even with sinners, and who only (2/3)

Sure, but Jesus wasn't looking for any big change at all, he was looking for people to put his teachings into practice. Jesus never taught anybody to hate their child for being trans.

When evaluating someones words, it is helpful to take into context things other than just the one sentence. (1/3)

The heart of God is to fight for the poor, the foreigners, and those who have suffered injustice; not to take away money from the poor, ignore the oppressed, and turn away your own flesh and blood because they don't align with your values. Do better. (3/3)

"Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?" - Isaiah 58:7

I wish this was the verse that Christians took to heart today. It isn't. (2/3)

Christianity has been made up of many different people, some of whom do care about the rights of others, many of whom do not. The church as a whole goes through waves of good and bad over time, and right now we're in the middle of a long bad wave.
January 24, 2025 at 3:14 PM
It was really a teaching against how the church is today. So many "follow Jesus" but then don't change their life in any real way, so Jesus becomes the pocket god they whip out to make themselves feel better. Jesus taught that to follow him meant real change, and putting him above everything else.
January 24, 2025 at 3:10 PM
Right after that he said "And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple" - yet I doubt he literally expected his followers to carry around a physical cross. He was being hyperbolic, explaining that following him comes at a real cost and should not be done lightly.
January 24, 2025 at 3:10 PM
My hope was to gently remind them of that via Scripture in a non-antagonistic way so that hopefully some would listen. Maybe that was a foolish pipe dream. I wish we would be known for our love, but the church has been misguided and lost for a while now. I am terrified of where things go from here.
January 24, 2025 at 3:06 PM
I agree 100% - the church today, especially the evangelical church, is known by those fruits, and I can't tell you how much that disgusts me as well. The church, like any other human group, is a mixed bag of good and bad; but for a while now the bad have been much louder and larger than the good.
January 24, 2025 at 3:06 PM
It also must be listening, understanding, caring for physical needs, and respecting the rights and dignity of others above our own. We can do better than what we've been doing. Step up and show love! (3/3)
