Those claiming Dems should retreat on racial justice aren't hard-headed realists, they're pushing against the electoral tide rather than leaning into it. The story of Gen Z isn't about racist backlash or red-pilled young men. It's the most racially progressive generation in American history. 🧵

“The scheme provides unconditional, regular payments to eligible artists and creative workers, allowing them to focus on their practice without the pressure of commercial viability.”

“A cost-benefit analysis by Alma Economics found that for every €1 invested, society receives €1.39 in return.”
Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:

For public figures, the question we should ask is not "Are they a good person?" it's "Are they doing good with their platform?". Even if Klein is personally good, he's using his platform to play defense for the far right. There's no excuse for being this naive about them as a pundit of 20 years
Ezra Klein is a good person, and his mental blindspot led him to extend a presumption of good faith towards a deceased monster instead of wrestling with the monster's actual politics.

These can both be true.
right, this is the basic problem. ezra is a guy with a lot of virtues who has been forced into a situation where none of his virtues are actual virtues.

i am biased because i'm a stranger whom ezra klein helped for no reason, to such an extent that i would not be here (anywhere) without him.

One thing that has changed a lot for me in my politics this year is that I'm all about whatever moves people further to the left. I don't criticize the 101 shit as long as it's pushing people to 102. I'm far less locked into a specific ideology and much more locked in on needs.

Arguably the most essential ingredient in Finland's "miracle cure" for homelessness:

"The municipality of Helsinki owns 60,000 social housing units. It also owns 70% of land within city limits, runs its own construction company, and has a target of building 7,000 new homes a year."
“Finland’s success isn’t a matter of luck or the outcome of quick fixes. It’s the result of a sustained, well-resourced national strategy, driven by a ‘Housing First’ approach, providing people experiencing homelessness with immediate permanent housing.”

Because the below skeet went viral here, and people are arguing over it, I'm going to share some more info about it from a thread I did at the other place. I really need to just do an article about it but haven't done that yet. Until then, I hope readers find this thread useful. 🧵
Denver gave people experiencing homelessness $1k/month. A year later, nearly half had housing.

They also had fewer ER visits, nights spent in a hospital, and jail stays.

The report estimates that this reduction in public service use SAVED the city $589k.

Denver gave people experiencing homelessness $1,000 a month. A year later, nearly half of participants said they had housing.
Participants in Denver's basic-income program reported having more-secure housing, though results were similar in the trial and control groups.

Bigger Finding # 2:
Outrage-evoking misinfo seems to have little concern for truth

It is shared more w/out reading, but people still could tell you it wasn't true, they just don't care

In other words, we basically prove the adage "YOU CAN'T BRING FACTS TO A FEELINGS FIGHT"

This is one of the most important fights of the digital age, and we're losing it daily. We have to build a resistance to sharing misinformation, alongside exposing ourselves to misinformation networks. Check trusted sources for news. Being dialed in to any and everything hurts everyone around you.
I’m super excited to announce I'm part of an amazing team (<3 @williambrady.bsky.social @killianmcloughlin.bsky.social @mjcrockett.bsky.social) that just published a paper in @science.org on the role of outrage in spread of misinformation

Genuinely think anyone can “git gud” at any creative craft they are interested in. If we wanted to actually “democratize” art we would invest in housing, healthcare, food and education as human rights. All GenAI does is make people even more financially precarious and less able to pursue a passion
I think a bit of the "AI is democratizing art" argument is trying to avoid the ugly truth that to get good at anything you have to do a lot of it. I grew up "knowing" I was a good writer, but I really wasn't until about 700k words, and it took reading hours of scripts to really have a voice
