I remember Sun Microsystems after the dotcom bubble burst. There was a lot of server capacity waiting in datacentres and warehouses: falling demand meant these were destocked before any more were ordered from Sun. This meant a massive revenue hiatus that nearly killed Sun.

Reminds me of working on Data Lake projects where the success criterion was getting data into the data lake.

Data Lake, mainframe Linux, LLMs: all "dog walking on its hind legs" technologies. They don't do anything useful, but everyone is wowwed that they exist at all.
