Should have double-checked this, because a wrong "ARRAYFORMULA" threw it off. High-level monsters in OD&D are hitting pretty much every round, regardless of armor.

Then divide average hit points by average damage (3.5 hp, because d6s) to get how many times a character can be hit. Then you figure out how many attack rolls that takes, assuming reasonable armor and an attacker of the same level. High level combat doesn't actually take this long, because of magic.

I started by looking at average hit points by level. It's all d6 hit dice in the original, with some extra hit points here or there. One interesting thing: clerics start off close to fighters, but by level 11 have fewer hit points than magic-users. They make up for it with armor and saving throws.

Sketching an idea for the cover of the next ODD Hack issue. I think I'll like the general composition after a few adjustments. I just used whatever colored pencils I had nearby, but maybe I'll stick with a Skeletor + Ecto Cooler color scheme. Dunno.
