Last week someone called me sir when I was waiting in line and then when she heard my voice got wildly apologetic and started explaining that it was because of my hat and hoodie and blah blah blah and truly it was more uncomfortable than if she'd just said "hey you, come to this register"

as someone who lived and worked in some of the parts of New York the story takes place in, it felt so naturally a part of the setting. I felt like I've been to thirteenth avenue despite it not existing in the real world

I was laid off last week and the field of education research is basically gone (unless you want to do it under the guise of selling gen ai to schools). It's kind of astonishing
