The body forms calluses to protect itself from repetitive abrasive stressors, and slowly sheds them when they're not needed anymore. I don't think numbness is an indication of lacking, but of having to push through when that feeling room wasn't available. Just needs a bit of balm and time.

The unpredictability is key.

When the law is stupid enough, badly written and ambiguous enough, you can never be sure when it's going to step on your neck.

Even if today it didn't get you, maybe tomorrow it will.

A stupid enough law acts as stochastic terrorism.
