Yeah, I hope we're all anti killing cats.

My only point was that human drivers kill 30,000 people each year and by possibly many times as many cats, so it's helpful to have a baseline against which to judge "robot" drivers. Unless we plan to ban all driving until we figure out how to do it safely

Does that apply to human drivers too?

This chart shows annual wage growth rates, which are all positive and suggest that wages have nearly tripled since 1997.

It doesn't look like it's adjusted for inflation, so it may still show that wages have grown slower than output, but it's not immediately clear that's the case.

Typically in order to enter the White House complex, one needs to submit their information ahead of time for a background check. So presumably the secret service knew he had an active warrant when attended said event. Or someone overruled the background check requirement.

Those are men in New York City, not REAL men

The article could just as well be titled "Qcells furloughs 1,000 workers at US solar factories amid concerns they are using products made with forced labor"

The U.S. is a leading producer of polysilicon, it shouldn't be hard to find solar cells that are not from companies that use slave labor.

Should law enforcement officers be personally liable for crimes committed while performing their duties

Yes. Nobody should give a shit whether a given news item is "good for Democrats" or "good for Republicans". Tell us what it means for Americans.

Presumably a member of the military could have standing, as someone forced to be party to an illegal act?

There's an at least semi-reasonable argument to be made that this is what you get when you optimize your supply chains on short-run costs at the expense of resilience.

The challenge is the US economy runs on cost and consumers seem to care little about resilience (until they can't get something)

That sounds nice, but assuming she bought it with 20% down, she could have invested the down payment, rented and had $25 million now instead.

If she paid cash, that $420k in the S&P would be $129 million now...

So he wants the Fed to... raise interest rates? Does his new boss know this?

Good point!

The constitution seems oddly silent on movement of digital goods and controls on foreign exports of products dependent on U.S. technology

I'm pretty sure that's unconstitutional. Curious to see how it'll play out.

Article I, Section 9, Clause 5:

"No Tax or Duty shall be laid on Articles exported from any State."

This doesn't work quite as well with the university "deals", because Democrats generally believe in funding science and education, but I imagine there could be viable future investigations into the trustees responsible for deals that violate civil liberties and freedom of speech.

For instance, once Trump sued Paramount, Democrats should have announced that in the event of a "settlement", a future Democratic President would ensure a costly bribery investigation and lawsuit, to make it clear the real cost of the settlement was far higher than the immediate payment to Trump
July 31, 2025 at 12:32 PM
In fact, Democrats should publicly pre-commit to doing this. Both for policy certainty and to make it clear that future actions are "balancing the scales" rather than retribution.

Diners complain about HIDDEN service fees.

I would love to have restaurant workers paid fairly and never have to pay a tip again.

If workers are being paid fairly under the current system, there should be no additional cost to restaurants by paying a higher wage and eliminating tips.

I don't think it logically follows that a gap in values drives a crisis in confidence.

I have a lot of trust in the expertise of an executioner to know the best ways to kill somebody, even if I believe that the type of people drawn to become an executioner have very different values from me.

Whatever happened to people like this becoming hermits or joining a nice Cistercian monastery and never speaking to the rest of us again?

Is there any particular reason that members of Congress aren't escorted by the U.S. Capitol Police while doing these visits?

This sort of thing seems like it should be right up their alley.

I agree, I just imagine it becomes complicated to make a felony murder case when everyone is allowed to be walking around with a gun. The guy could claim he was running away from a lunatic with a gun who ended up killing someone in the crowd.
