The deadliest forest fire in American history was Wisconsin's Peshtigo Peninsula fire of October 8th, 1871.

Same weather conditions fanned the flames of the (much less murderous) Great Chicago Fire the same night -- Chicago being a press hub, city coverage drowned out the rural.
