Javier Sellanes, Ph.D., is a marine biology professor at Universidad Católica del Norte and an Associate Researcher at ESMOI. His research mainly focuses on #DeepSea #BenthicEcology and the taxonomy of #mollusks.

Erin Easton, Ph.D., is Director of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Marine Ecosystems Institute, an adjunct researcher at ESMOI Universidad Católica del Norte (and former #DSBSoc officer). Her research focuses on the exploration of understudied oceanic regions and their #BenthicHabitats.

Congratulations to Erin Easton, Ph.D. & Javier Sellanes, Ph.D., recipients of the 2025 Citation of Merit from The Explorers Club! In 2024, they led an international team with @schmidtocean.bsky.social & discovered 150+ new species on unexplored #seamounts in the Nazca-Desventuradas Marine Park.

Happy day 5 of #17DSBS!

Meet Pedro A. Peres, who uses #genomics & #eDNA to study the spatial and temporal diversity of #DeepSea species. At #17DSBS, he’s presenting on how sampling strategies affect eDNA results and a 12-year genomic diversity assessment of deep-sea species in the Gulf of Mexico.

Meet Brenda Lizbeth Esteban Vázquez, a PhD student researching #Rissoidae snails from #Arctic ecosystems like #HydrothermalVents and #WhaleFalls. She uses phylogenetics, RAD sequencing, and microbiome analysis to understand their connectivity, distributions, and habitat adaptations.

Happy day 4 of #17DSBS!

Meet Luke McCartin, who studies #DeepSeaCoral diversity using #eDNA sequencing in the Gulf of Mexico & Caribbean. Luke’s work involves using #ROVs to collect coral & seawater samples, analyzing DNA barcodes to reveal their #biodiversity and to understand coral distributions.
