""Hi! I’m Gerrit, a biologist and computer nerd from Germany who traded reef dives for deep dives into data. I use images and algorithms to study life beneath the waves. From the coral reefs of Madagascar to the deep-sea hydrothermal vents of the Indian Ocean, I create digital models of underwater habitats. During my Master’s at the @Uni.Oldenburg, I used Structure from Motion photogrammetry to turn hundreds of reef photos into detailed 3D models. Now, four months into my PhD with the Indian Ocean Exploration (INDEX) project, I’m working with deep-sea videos collected by remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). I am Kurt Bryant Bacharo, currently a graduate student in the Molecular Invertebrate and Systematics Laboratory @miselab.bsky.social at the University of the Ryukyus. Prior to relocating to Japan, I finished my BS and MS degrees in Marine Biology at the University of San Carlos in Cebu, Philippines where I had the privilege to study the readily accessible shallow-water reefs in my country. Coming from the developing world, the concept of deep-sea exploration has always been out of sight, out of mind. The opportunity only opened to me when I was selected as an OceanCensus participant to board JAMSTEC R/V Kaimei for the KM 24-03 (Leg 2) research cruise last year to explore the Kyushu-Palau Ridge and the Daito Islands. The latter is part of the Deep-Sea Archaic Refugia in Karst (D-ARK) project, whose main objective has been on the documentation of the deep-sea biodiversity found inside limestone caves. Now in its second year, I am lucky to be part of the project again to further explore the hidden biodiversity of the Daito Islands. This year's participation for the KM 25-06C research cruise was made possible by a Research Support Award granted by @DSBSoc. Meet Jonathan Flores, a postdoctoral researcher at the Instituto de Biología de Organismos Marinos #IBIOMAR (CCT CONICET-CENPAT) in Puerto Madryn, Argentina working with #DeepSea #echinoderms.
Hi everyone, I am Jonathan Flores, a postdoctoral researcher at the “Instituto de Biología de Organismos Marinos” (IBIOMAR, CCT CONICET-CENPAT, @ibiomar.conicet) in Puerto Madryn, Argentina. I study the fascinating world of #DeepSea sea urchins (Echinodermata: Echinoidea), focusing on their diversity, biogeography, and reproductive biology. Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to join scientific expeditions to some of the least-explored areas in the Southwestern Atlantic, including the Mar del Plata Submarine Canyon on the Argentine continental slope and the Marine Protected Area Namuncurá - Banco Burdwood. Erin Easton, Ph.D., is Director of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Marine Ecosystems Institute, an adjunct researcher at ESMOI Universidad Católica del Norte (and former #DSBSoc officer). Her research focuses on the exploration of understudied oceanic regions and their #BenthicHabitats.

Meet Flávia Tiemi Masumoto, a master’s student at the University of São Paulo studying #DeepSea biodiversity and litter and now researching the impacts of #microplastics in #DeepSeaFishes collected from the DEEP-OCEAN expeditions.
"I’m Flávia Masumoto. I am a master’s degree student at Oceanography at the University of São Paulo, Brazil. During my undergraduate studies, I joined the Laboratory of Diversity, Ecology, and Evolution of Fishes (DEEP Lab), coordinated by Prof. Dr. Marcelo Melo, where I still work today. I had the opportunity to participate in two expeditions of the DEEP-OCEAN project, whose main objective was to improve knowledge about deep-sea fishes in Brazilian waters, using bottom trawl nets and fish traps for sampling." "It was my first time on a research vessel and a huge opportunity that started guiding my path toward deep-sea research. One of my biggest surprises was discovering that there were no publications about deep-sea litter sampling in the southwestern Atlantic! During the second expedition, now more experienced and having read up on the subject, I was more meticulous. As a result, we published an article reporting with the first report and characterization of litter sampled in the area (DOI: 10.2139/ssrn.4467286), and more publications are on the way. For my master’s degree, I was encouraged to continue this work, but now with a focus on the impacts of litter. This led me into the world of microplastics, where I am now investigating their presence in the fish sampled during these expeditions." Meet Oenone “Nonny” Scott, a PhD student at the University of Essex modelling larval dispersal of #octocorals in the Scotia Sea to understand connectivity in vulnerable ecosystems. With a background in biology, coding, and conservation, she’s passionate about #SciencePolicy and ecosystem protection.
"Nonny (Oenone) Scott is a PhD student at the University of Essex. She is working on larval dispersal models of octocorals in the Scotia Sea (Southern Ocean), with a goal to help improve our understanding of the connectivity of these vulnerable marine ecosystems. At the 17DSBS she presented two posters – one covering the larval dispersal work and her progress to date, and the other proposing a framework for working with hydrodynamic models in ecology and biology. She got her BSc in Biology, with a concentration in Marine Biology and minor in Environmental Science & Policy. From there she joined a start-up in the energy/ tech space. As one of the first employees her role was incredibly broad, and developed considerably over the three years she was there. Working in the tech space inspired her curiosity in coding, which lead to her seeking a masters in Computational Methods in Ecology & Conservation, which facilitated her move back into the marine space. Alongside computational work, Nonny is also really interested in science-policy overlaps, resource management and conservation, and outreach. When she isn’t doing her PhD, she is working for a freediving club, listening to who-dun-its, or trying to get to the sea! She is very appreciative to be part of such a vibrant and welcoming community of deep-sea scientists, and is very grateful to the Deep Sea Biology Society for supporting and facilitating her in-person participating in the 17DSBS." "Furthermore, due to the amazing time series at PAP which goes back over 30 years, I am aiming to identify whether the relationships between body size and feeding niche are temporally stable. This is incredibly important as the amount of food reaching the abyssal seafloor if predicted to decrease (in this area) due to climate change, therefore we have to identify natural fluctuations in this trend if we want to monitor the state of the megafauna going forward. Meet Pedro A. Peres, who uses #genomics & #eDNA to study the spatial and temporal diversity of #DeepSea species. At #17DSBS, he’s presenting on how sampling strategies affect eDNA results and a 12-year genomic diversity assessment of deep-sea species in the Gulf of Mexico.

My interests in science are related to using genomics to answer questions in ecology and evolution, currently focusing on deep-sea species." Meet Brenda Lizbeth Esteban Vázquez, a PhD student researching #Rissoidae snails from #Arctic ecosystems like #HydrothermalVents and #WhaleFalls. She uses phylogenetics, RAD sequencing, and microbiome analysis to understand their connectivity, distributions, and habitat adaptations.

"All animals, including deep corals, release DNA into their environments. This eDNA can be captured using Niskin sampling bottles mounted to ROVs. Meet Luke McCartin, who studies #DeepSeaCoral diversity using #eDNA sequencing in the Gulf of Mexico & Caribbean. Luke’s work involves using #ROVs to collect coral & seawater samples, analyzing DNA barcodes to reveal their #biodiversity and to understand coral distributions.
"Luke McCartin is a postdoctoral research associate in Dr. Santiago Herrera’s lab at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania, United States. He uses molecular tools to study the distribution of life on the deep seafloor and its evolution. At the Deep-Sea Biology Symposium, Luke will be presenting research that uses environmental DNA (eDNA) sequencing to determine the diversity and distributions of deep corals. Using submersibles like remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), Luke’s work involves collecting samples of corals and the seawater around them from the deep-sea floor for analysis. He compares sequences of DNA from the coral specimens and the eDNA that they release into seawater in order to determine the biodiversity of deep corals in the area."
