Nice STEP prep on inequalities involving algebraic symmetry. It also develops the understanding of under which conditions your proof is valid.
Prove that, if c >= a and d >= b, then ab + cd >= bc + ad. If x >= y, use the previous result to show that x^2 + y^2 >= 2xy. If further, x >= z and y>= z, use the first result to show that z^2 + xy >= xz + yz and deduce that x^2 + y^2 + z^2 >= xy + yz + zx. Prove that this result holds for all x, y and z.

I’m running STEP online sessions for all our applicants. In my first session I covered functional equations. Such nice questions! I really like this one:
Given that f(0)=1 and f(x-y) = f(x)f(y) - f(a-x)f(a+y), show that f(a) = 0, f(t) = f(-t), f(2a) = -1, f(2a - t) = - f(t) and f(4a+t) = f(t).

In #MathsToday, do you tell stories in your maths lessons? I always try to create a narrative in my lectures with varying degrees of success.
Extract from lecture notes: square root of -1, we lied (aka complex numbers, aka mental tortures. In the 16th century in Italy, Girolano Cardano proposed a method for solving cubic equations that involved the square root of expressions which were potentially negative. Mathematicians shuddered. The horror of the square root of negative numbers took over the scientific world. Cardano himself called it mental tortures. The complex numbers were born.
