Today in 1961, the Soviet Union tested the largest-ever thermonuclear bomb—a 50-Megaton RDS-220 (originally designed for a 100 Megaton yield). The device, later dubbed “Tsar Bomba,” was dropped by a Tu-95 Bear bomber and exploded about 13,123 feet over Novaya Zemlya above the Arctic Circle.

Today in 1992 at the Nevada Test Site, the United States conducted DIVIDER, a low-yield (less than 20 kilotons) underground nuclear weapon test. Bipartisan legislation imposing a 9-month test moratorium signed by President George H.W. Bush 9 days later made this the last full-scale US test—to date.

Today in 1963, the Washington-Moscow “hotline” became operational. Although commonly pictured as a red telephone, the Direct Communications Link was originally an encrypted set of teletypes in the National Military Command Center at the Pentagon and at Communist Party headquarters in Moscow.
