Because #AERA25 posters are due this week, here is one last ask:
Please make a non-interactive poster so people don't have to touch it, multiple people can see at once, and viewers don't have to get close.
Easiest way is to upload a pdf. iPosters are ugly anyway 😉
April 5, 2025 at 3:33 PM
Another plea to please just make a regular poster for #AERA25. Walk the walk with accessibility even if @aeraedresearch.bsky.social is not.
Avoid the ableist iPoster format and upload a regular pdf so multiple people can see from a distance and no one has to touch your poster--no scrolling!

We also analyzed lesson creation process
Some teachers were hesitant to use ChatGPT; only 1/8 had used it before
All found it useful, but were surprised at some of its limitations
Ts appreciated coaching to learn about prompting
Ts wished that it created more finished products (images useless)

We examined how creating mot-supportive lessons w ChatGPT would improve Ts mot-supporting practices, Ss emotions, motivation, & engagement
Found Ts used more relevance messages, non-standard examples, and gave more specific feedback
Ss were less bored and used more positive words about lesson

New OA Publication!
Our team worked with elem. teachers to use ChatGPT to enhance their mathematics lessons based on students’ interests.
It was a team effort (researchers and teachers) and I’m proud of the result

This year I created a little research "course" for my lab. Wk 2 was Why We Ask The Qs We Do.
In this wk, we all completed a little epistemology quiz. Lower is more constructivist, higher more positivist (names redacted). Then, we asked "I wonder" Qs and discussed how our Qs related to our beliefs.

Every week I track my hours across categories of my work (color coded into broad service, research, teaching buckets).
This is the graph for fall 2024 and my distribution of hours across the week (I prefer to work fewer hours 7 days vs more M-F).
Tracking helps me stay focused & make choices.

Grades are submitted and semester service is winding down. Had a fantastic fall with 18 students working with our lab. I enjoy finding little gifts for them to thank them for awesome work.
This year found these positive tomatoes to remind them of all the "tomoji" surveys they administered!

Our puppy is only allowed on the furniture if she is on top of a blanket and it amuses us to only put black and white blankets on the sofas so that she will be camouflaged.

I use our lab logo on some presentations and I used GenAI to help design it a couple of years ago. Otherwise, I've used GenAI for some decent custom accent images.
Logo is a young "blue hen"--I study kids and technology

Final day Games for Learning class yesterday and we had a starter deck Magic:The Gathering tournament
We discussed how game mechanics from M:TG are seen in many card and board games since & some learning goals for M:TG itself
Love teaching this class & playing & talking games w/such smart students!

Though women/trans/NB students reported lower belonging and competence than men at start of course, gaps narrowed by end of course
Many aspects of motivation were stable across the semester, but CS and crs importance declined; CS self-concept & Python self-eff improved, esp at start of course

We investigated belonging as complementary to expectancies and values and found that competence beliefs & perceptions of course importance and cost related to final course grade; crs interest related to contemporaneous grades during course

Proud to have this paper finally out! Thanks to my collaborators, including @hyerinlee.bsky.social
Within, we use SEVT and belonging to study first-yr CS students’ motivation across a semester in an intro course (Python programming)

Finishing up my 2nd time teaching my new class, Games for Learning. Had our final content lesson this week: CT, music, and art games.
Pictured are Code Master and Lord of the Chords.
Love teaching this class and thinking about development, implementation, & evaluation of games for learning.

Is this place exclusively for work talk or are we also sharing other things? If the latter, here's the sad final harvest from my tomato and pepper plants before the first freeze this past week.

A little late to the word cloud game, but here is my word cloud from scholargoggler.com
Guess I do study math a lot...
Happy that "motivation" is at least somewhat large in there--I can set it as a goal to get it larger in the future.

Spent way too much time yesterday choosing colors for lab t-shirts with our logo.
Lab member voted and it looks like it will be light blue.
In-school study starts in February!

I've been sharing these a few yrs on the other place. Trying to transition over here.
This is my hours tracking for fall 2023. Averages tot, ave hrs per day, and a gif across weeks.
Tracking helps me determine whether to take on new things, helps me understand my stress, and is just kind of fun.

Trying to wean myself off the other place.
Nothing academic to post at the moment, so I'll share a fall scene from our family's day-trip outing to Philly yesterday.

Tonight was science games in my ed games class.
We played Terraforming Mars and Wingspan.
Took a while to get off the ground (haha) with both, but I think we had fun and had valuable discussions

I can't figure out how to quote post, but I did try that stablediffusion profile name thing and I'm not even a person...

We had a beautiful day yesterday for our lab fall gathering--this year a Carnival!
Was a fun setting for students and collaborators to form/deepen connections. We are all humans AND researchers; getting to know both helps the work.
