As has been rightly pointed out, should #SquidGame still even be included in such a list? Perhaps it’s been absorbed and swallowed by the capitalist system, stripped of its critical and subversive qualities through its heavy commercialisation, turned into a commodified product… etc

You’re right, depressingly very true. Can you recommend others that are worth watching?

An issue so close to my heart, I grew up listening to my grandad's harrowing stories from being a child of the Spanish civil war. The trauma and scars lasted all his life, I remember in his final months with dementia he was still singing about Franco and his men www.theguardian.com/society/2024...

The point of this thread is to document this. I’m still exploring and finding out more information. But I’m continually amazed at the powerful role archives and historians play in unravelling stories which may have otherwise been forgotten. Thank you, to all, for keeping so many legacies alive 🤍🤍🤍

Marcelina, also a member of the communist party, had to flee Spain. Due to her husbands involvement in the militia she ended up in hiding, in the south of France. I got in touch with an archivist who kindly shared some photos of the battalion

With these records, I was able to find them in Spanish archives. I found out that my great-grandfather José was part of the communist militia Rosa Luxemburg battalion, fighting against Franco’s nationalist forces in/around Bilbao. Ultimately, he was sent to a prisoner labour camp and executed.

And thanks to the amazing archive at University of Southampton, I found all of his and his sibling’s documentation and records from their arrival and time in the refugee camp in England. From this I was able to find out more about my great-grandparents, José and Marcelina Guerricaechevarria Revuelta

We were fortunate he lived a long life filled with family, love, singing, dancing, and incredible storytelling, capturing experiences of loss, trauma, and desperation, as well as hope and triumph. He was the best abuelo, But his passing encouraged me to find out more about my great-grandparents
