Simple Maths for Historians (Wes Streeting)

Resident Drs used to be paid £100
They lost 35% = £65
Even if the pay increased 28.9% of £65 = £83.78
Still down £16.22

£100k debts, reduced job prospects & working conditions

Labour isn’t good at Maths

It’s often hard to get your MP to understand specific GP problems and influence decisions

Take for example Ilford North where GP to patient ratios are some of the worst in the country and aren’t improving

2661 patients/GP up 510 since 2018
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 2257 patients/GP

If only the local MP had any influence

This report was published 20 October 2022

This was the day Liz Truss announced her resignation

Also the day General Practice was ignored & lost potentially forever

In general the smaller the GP practice the better the satisfaction from patients, the more appointments offered per patient, the shorter the waits, lower costs

Yet … Wes & NHSE are
pushing for large Neighbourhood Centres ignoring existing GP practices

Why? What’s the reason?
November 8, 2025 at 9:05 AM
GPs - ‘Lazy, laggards’

1.3million appts take place in General Practice each day

20 x more than A&E
3.5 x more than hospital out-patients

5million more appts each month than 2019

Wes Streeting has decided he doesn’t need GPs

Let’s see if people agree

When Hospital Trusts run community care

Virtual beds £665 for a 4 admission in your own bed, in your own home with telephone access to hospital

For half the cost you could have a daily GP & District Nurse visit

Fund community care delivered by community clinicians & managers

GPs are asking for funding so that patients can have greater access to GPs

You will hear something different from Wes Streeting & Government

They will say that there is more funding & GPs but there isn’t anywhere near enough of either

They aren’t telling you the truth

‘Professional protectionism’ = patient protection

It’s really important people understand why knowledge is needed in patient care

Protecting a role eg Nurse/Dr is about protecting patients from harm

You don’t know what you don’t know or understand what you have never been taught

Is Pharmacy First working?

NHSE now insist Pharmacists do it, despite struggling to meet thresholds, £17/consult + £500 for 20-29 / £1000 for 30

300k/month is less 1% of consults in GP, 31million, but most cost more than double the amount of a GP appt to provide - why?

Just fund Pharmacies & GPs

Not everything has to be cost effective. Society is about caring too!

However the estimated loss to the economy of sickness is £150bn a year

www.oxera.com/wp-content/u...

And the UK has the highest waiting lists for healthcare in the G20

People don’t suffer from Taxes

People suffer because the UK doesn’t Tax & invest in the nation

Worse healthcare, roads, schools, pensions and decades of the rich getting richer

The UK is a low tax economy with low public investment

Once upon a time a report was written by MPs across parties for Parliament outlining how to fix General Practice

Hours were spent taking evidence, the conclusions were clear

No one read it or if they did they ignored it

Including Wes Streeting

Wes Streeting & Labour are planning the demise of the Family Doctor this was clear 2yrs ago

GPs have been fighting to provide the best care possible for patients yet have been faced with 20% cuts in funding

Replacing the Family Dr eases the path to the Tesco/Boots/Corporate GP

GP CRISIS

102,000 hairdressers in England with 40,000 salons

38,000 GPs with 6200 Surgeries

31 million people consult GPs every month & a similar number have haircuts

You can see the problem @wesstreeting @DHSCgovuk

People spend £400pa on hair
GPs receive £169pa per patient
November 1, 2025 at 9:09 AM
You’re right about some of the issues, on the whole in each age group it is more women attending the GP & more women working in healthcare

Women live longer too

It’s more complex than a first look

And quite a bit to unpick. In some cases women are ignored in other cases men are

Better is needed

I had a haircut last week

It took a week to book & when I arrived there was only one hairdresser, instead of the usual 4

One away, one sick, one unable to recruit

A man walked in, honestly he looked in great need of a haircut

‘Sorry mate we’re fully booked’

The parallels …

Cost to provide an appointment:
- ARRS £35
- Pharmacy First £48
- Network Hub £48
- Urgent Treatment Centre £85
- A&E £150-£500

Current provision to GP Practices £169 per patent per year for average 7 consultations but everything else on top

Cost of a consultation £24

GP Crisis is due to Top-Down management

~20% cuts in £/patient funding in 10yr
~Partnership future undermined
~NI hikes
~£ moved to Primary Care Networks
~GP roles cut from practices using ARRS

More costly services being promoted by Govt/NHSE at the cost of patient care
October 28, 2025 at 10:00 AM
Scottish ‘junior’ Doctors accepted a pay offer 2023 with no strikes

▪️12.4% 2023
▪️inflation beating pay rises for 3yrs
▪️commitment to full pay restoration
▪️removal from “independent” pay review body

The Govt listened & talked to the BMA🤷🏻‍♂️

Imagine a Govt willing to negotiate

You can do it Wes!!
October 27, 2025 at 9:24 AM
Interesting that CQC latest report ‘State of care’ will get little attention due to the resignation of Chair Julian Hartley

Is this because it counters everything Wes Streeting is pushing in community care

Seems likely

As a GP, I am not allowed to receive a pen or post-it note pad from a pharmaceutical company rep

Govt banned them in case I was influenced to prescribe medications

This should also be banned

Influence being bought in Govt

Patients should influence not the healthy & wealthy
October 26, 2025 at 9:16 PM
The ‘manager’ is blaming the players, #NHS is ‘broken’ according to Wes Streeting

But he has spent a year ‘breaking’ the teams who provide care for patients

Waiting lists⬆️, A&E waits⬆️, GPs & Resident Drs in dispute, NHS leaders leaving, NHSE reform on pause
October 26, 2025 at 3:49 PM
Moving care into the community 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Moving funding to the community - not so much🤷🏻‍♂️

Wes ‘Spin Doctor’ not a medical doctor
October 26, 2025 at 10:52 AM
Scotland’s GPs are equally shattered but better headcount per head of population
Sadly life expectancy sits much lower
There is much more to do across the whole of UK
October 26, 2025 at 8:31 AM
When you spend as much time as I do checking facts & figures around the #NHS, it’s sometimes hard to counter the Govt machine in terms of public opinion or perception.

Is what being said ring true or false?

Check the facts & listen to what those on the ground are saying too.
