In case anyone wants to know how I feel about the actions of the University of Michigan today:
Subject line: Cowards To the cowardly leadership of the University of Michigan: My name is Brian Smith, recent graduate of the Educational Studies doctoral program in the School of Education. My mother, father, sister, aunt, uncle, and cousin are also alumni of the University of Michigan across LSA. My grandfather, as a student at Michigan, heard the news that Pearl Harbor had been bombed by the Japanese in the Michigan Union, prompting him to immediately enlist in the Navy. I feel your cowardly actions today in bending the knee to the dictator that currently sits in the Oval Office demand a similar call to action from people such as myself. I am a white, straight man that attended the university on the Rackham Merit Fellowship. This fellowship, at least at the time, had the explicit goals of promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the graduate school. As my story indicates, THIS DID NOT PREVENT WHITE MEN SUCH AS MYSELF FROM HAVING ACCESS TO SUCH BENEFITS AND PRIVILEGES. What it did do was allow graduate students from backgrounds different than my own to attend the university with fewer financial barriers. This created a diverse collection of thinkers (the graduate school was consistently more diverse than the undergraduate population), whose points of view sharpened ideas and created more impactful scholarship. You probably think that you are saving the university today from financial punishments, but everyone knows that if you give your lunch money to the bully on the first day of school, he's only going to come back for it again and again until you do something about it. You should be ashamed of how readily you show your faces in luxury suites and on the field in the Big House only to roll over when you have the chance to stand up and do what is right in the face of tyranny and bigotry. While you have chosen the cowardly path today, it is NEVER too late to do the right thing. I implore you all to reconsider this decision and act like the leaders and best you all claim to be.
