Burden in Grace ( #contedrawing on toned paper)
After #Rodin’s #FallenCaryatid
Rodin’s sculpture speaks to physical & symbolic weight;
My drawing explores the quiet, almost meditative #strength in the act of bearing.

🧵🪡 Your messages of encouragement & outrage have reminded me that we’re not alone.
We’re still here 👋, still doing the work—and still building something BIGGER than a single grant because #BlackMammasMatter.

🧵🪡 #LIFE2Study was never just about data.
It is a critical effort to understand how lifelong social environment—eg, stress, support, and lived experiences—can shape biological processes & health across generations. 💜

🧵🪡 Black moms have faced higher #maternalmortality rates than white moms for over a century in the U.S.
Our research was about moms and babies & building a future where every mom and baby has the right to thrive—regardless of race, zip code, or income. #LIFE2Study #BlackMaternalHealth #PublicHealth

🧵It’s #BlackMaternalHealthWeek -a time to center Black moms & a need for action.
I’m reflecting on what this means in a year when our #NIH grant “Looking Back to Look Forward: Social Environment Across the Lifecourse, Epigenetics, & Birth Outcomes in Black Families” was terminated.

I urge everyone to #StandUpForScience, #publichealth, #maternalhealth and #infanthealth. This is a #calltoaction for reporters, the public, and all those who care about #justice, #humanity, and the right for mothers and infants thrive. 🪡

This decision by #NIH is trying to silence science that seeks to address adverse #maternalhealth and #infanthealth outcomes and the voices of more than 500 Black mothers and babies enrolled in the study.🪡
March 22, 2025 at 7:11 PM
The termination of this #NIHgrant means that the Trump admin has turned its back on an entire cohort of #Blackwomen who recently delivered a baby, their #infants, & their families. 🪡
March 22, 2025 at 7:11 PM
🪡Despite a ⬇️ in the overall #maternalmortality rate in the US from 32.9 deaths/100,000 live births in 2021 to 18.6 in 2023, rates for Black women remain unduly ⬆️ at 50.3 deaths/100,000 live births. Similarly, the #infantmortality rate for Black infants is 2.4 times higher than that for White infants
March 22, 2025 at 7:11 PM
🧵Yesterday, I received notice that my #NIH grant, on the social environment, lifecourse, epigenetics & #birthoutcomes in Black families, was terminated. This grant represented a critical effort to address the ⬆️ rates of maternal & infant mortality in the US, particularly among Black mothers & babies

In #academia you encounter a lot of rejection. It’s important to learn how to not give a f*** and still care at the same time so that you keep moving forward and don’t leave a piece of yourself behind.

#Academia is stressful. Last Spring, I started #drawing again after a 20 yr hiatus…
I don’t know why I ever stopped given the joy and peace I feel when creating. I’m having so much fun working in graphite.🎨🖌️🖼️
