For as the research highlights we hear these comments so often it becomes normalised and we learn to accept it - that it’s just the norm. We need to break this norm- every LGBTIQA+ person deserves to go to work knowing they will be safe and free of harrassment.

But like sexist comments and behaviour - we need to show that we don’t accept them and they are harmful and damaging. If you see or hear a LGBTIQA+ person receive these comments - check in on them and ensure they are ok….

people feel entitled to question, comment, and harass people about these topics because that’s what they assume and think we are- who we have sex with.
Good allyship is calling these comments and behaviour out - or calling in.

Reducing LGBTIQA+ identities to sex and private spaces of the bedroom is wrong - and we don’t do this or speak like this about cisgender or heterosexual people - so people need to stop doing this. This is why I believe there is such a high prevalence….

For example- many sports clubs/ orgs- when questioned or prompted to reflect on how many LGBTIQA+ people may be in their club, publicly open about their identity- a common response is ‘we don’t need to know what goes on in the bedroom’ or ‘it’s none of our business who people have sex with’.

Thank you to Prof Kerry Robinson Dr Cristyn Davies and the team for leading this important research.

What stands out to me, in comparison to some of my work and research - is reducing LGBTIQA+ identities and relationships to sex and sexualising our communities.
