Buddha said nothing about gods, he didn't reject gods. Buddhism has nothing to do with theism v/s atheism, it considers the whole debate pointless.
And "esa dhammo sanantano" is a part of Dhammapada which is itself the oldest part of text authenticated by it's mention in the Gandharan texts.

In Tripitika it's mentioned Buddha used to meditate in front of chaityas of previous 4 Buddhas.
In Asokan carvings of Saanchi, there are Buddhist monks wearing Persian caps venerating fire in front of stupa, such caps are also seen in Burmese painting and Dalai lama's hat

Xuanzang in his notes mentions how king Siladitya leads a religious procession while dressing as Sakra (Indra) while his son the prince dressed as Bramha, each present on left and right side of Buddha idol carried on elephant respectively. It resembles Gandharan art.
