Weirdly I've always read Rick/Coo/Kine as being more like animals while Dedede is definitely a person capable of speech.

I know they could talk in the anime, but I can't remember if they ever did in the games. Either way, they give more "animal" vibes to me, so always saw Rick as an actual hamster.
