Based on the British Morris Oxford Model III, the HM Ambassadors were first introduced as yellow taxis in Kolkata in the year 1962. Since then, they have been as much a part of the city’s urban identity as the tram, the Howrah Bridge, and the Victoria Memorial.

On November 25, the WB State Transport Department announced that most of the city’s iconic yellow ambassador taxis — once known as ‘Kings of the road’ will be phased out for exceeding the 15-year service limit.
