people who have never experienced open racism — or open bigotry of any sort — do not appreciate the way it can be psychologically destabilizing. and on the main, it actually isn’t healthy to be so resilient and thick-skinned that you don’t react to slurs and dehumanization

Effective mentorship in the academy isn't just kind - it's strategic. We strengthen our academic community when we support and elevate our junior colleagues. We create a supportive community with a culture of collaboration and innovation. I benefited from having precisely this kind of mentors.

Faculty mentoring in academic institutions, a thread.
As I advance in my academic career (read: as I keep getting more gray hair), I've come to appreciate, even more than before, the profound responsibility we (senior-ish faculty) have to support and nurture emerging talent, not diminish it.

Do y'all have a library card to your local public library? You should get one and USE it! This is my ridiculously gorgeous local library. They have books, ebooks, apps and tablets for kids, video games, DVDs, and puzzles, passes to local museums, seeds for the garden etc. Protect our libraries!

I've said it before -- I'm not sure my career will ever recover following the pandemic. It was hard. And it was enraging to sit in zoom meetings with men saying "I've had so much time to write" 🙃🫠
"Other countries have social safety nets; the US has women."

Four years ago, that quote of mine went massively viral, maybe because it captured the crushing weight of what so many women had long been holding, plus the impossibility of holding even more without support as the pandemic dragged on. 1/

The Handmaid's Tale is a good book. But did you know that there's a book written by a Black woman about a post-apocalyptic Earth heavily affected by climate change and societal decline. The book was published in 1993, but is set in 2024 following a presidential election 👀 #BookSky #BlackBookSky

What began as a casual online discussion among Choctaw community members has grown into a cultural rebirth, reconnecting Native communities with their ancestral roots through the Inchunwa Project.
