That streak is only about 1-1.5 seconds long. The species that makes it is Photinus pyralis and it looks like a J kind of

This is not Photinus pyralis. The black on the pronotum is more like a spot on the pronotum in P. pyralis. This could be a couple other species like P. consimilis or P. obscurellus.

There are fireflies in every state of the US but Hawaii. West of the Rocky Mountains they just don't glow/flash as adults.

As far as I know the real purpose is unknown. Males sometimes use it to wipe the females, but why is unclear.
