Dropping “fuck yeah” in department meetings since 1999. Outdoorsy, bookish, teaching-adjacent. Maryland.
I’m not really surprised that a Catholic church did this in Chicago. But I couldn’t help making this.

Age Verification? I played “Stunts” on an MS Dos computer. Before Stunts, my video games came on 5 1/4” floppy disks.

There’s this: NO DUH. See my last tweet about student profiles. This is not CAUSATION, bros. And next, the basic structure of HS pretty much guarantees more instructional time than college. HS classes are often daily, 50-minutes to 90 minutes long, or every other day, 90 minutes, for whole year.

Now let’s look at this. Again, maybe there’s a lot of elided statistical work that is actually good research. But that doesn’t appear in this argument. The comparison here is between AP exam takers and students in a college class. AP exam takers are ATYPICAL.

Next up, this. CB boasts that only 60-75% of students earn the “c” credit or better on exams, vs 75-90% of college students in courses. Now maybe there’s some fancy stats going on here, or maybe this is bullshit. Because you’re comparing HS students (sometimes sophomores! Juniors!) to college

Imma start here: I would never call the AP EngLang rubrics “detailed.” They merely gesture at objectivity. “Has a line of reasoning” and “uses evidence to support ideas” are basic things; there is little language about the actual quality of that line of reasoning or that evidence.

Not my 9th grader calling Romeo a fuck boy in a literary analysis essay for class 😜😜😜😜😜

Total student loads at a small public high school. 118 will increase as we enroll 9th grade. 147. 110 for dept chair. 128 will increase as we add 9th graders. 167 won’t change. 42 for a teacher we share with another building. 127 might creep up. 50-60 for the librarian…

Friends, you can vote with your wallet too. It would be swell if everyone joined completely at every step, but do whatever you can personally. Do your best to send the message to corporations that they ain’t people

Whose brilliant fucking idea was it to give 82 juniors in AP English a practice test complete with 3 essays?

Oh. Mine. Fuck me.

Pictured: the collected works of my students, all approximately 500-ish pages, to be graded by Wednesday. (82 students.x 3 essays x average 2ish pages)

Some of the best, most interesting, most engaged writing in the AP Lang classroom is coming when I explicitly lower the stakes and encourage experimentation. The next step: how do we do all that cool shit even in more serious high stakes work? #iteachela #ela #aplang

“Research-backed” curricula.
It’s the new buzzphrase linked to “science of reading” and “knowledge-rich” curriculum people (which is just E.D. Hirsch and cultural literacy in shiny new packaging).

Today, in student essays I have read: “ The Ethics of Pooping in School Restrooms.” Includes the phrase “you are contributing to the unique, humid scent of the school bathrooms…”

Also, a missed opportunity for a pun. #iteachEnglish #ela 📖.

Given the state of the Baltimore Ravens’ loss yesterday, it’s worth sharing that one student submitted (over a week ago!!!). an essay about the ethics of firing head coaches, especially Harbaugh… fun read!!!
