The 2 biggest old birches in the woods were both toppled in the same storm a couple of years back.

The light gaps opened up have exploded with flowers like these devil's bit, flying insects, and young trees.

The sheer *dynamism* of an Atlantic rainforest has been a revelation over these 16+ years.

This is astonishing.

Although actually, it isn't if your values are focused on having the 'right' to shoot gamebirds in the face for a bit of fun rather than protect wild birds of high conservation value from a devastating disease. #BirdFlu #Ornithology

Birch is the commonest tree in #ScotlandsRainforest because they can spread their tiny seeds far and wide, and deer tend to avoid eating the saplings. Downy birch can survive further north than silver birch, but they also hybridise easily. #ThickTrunkTuesday

OPPORTUNITY: Today's the last day to respond to a public consultation on burning vegetation on peat soils in England.

It will take you maybe 20 minutes to complete & is nothing like as scary as you might think. See markavery.info/2025/05/21/m... for what I wrote.

You can do it.
