Dreadnought Holiday

Snarky history. Hideous French battleships. Nautical nonsense. Always check the alt text.
(Okay, okay - the real OG stone frigate here is Diamond Rock, which was commissioned into the Royal Navy as the slowest warship on record, with a top speed equivalent to whatever continental drift could conjure up. Looks less like a ship though.)

It's not escaped my notice that - just like generative AI - a substantial amount of use cases can be summed up as "make sexy lady appear"

Does anybody else find it odd that you don't hear much about pyramids keeping razor blades sharp any more?
When did they stop working?

RAF Elvington was home to two French squadrons. Operating heavy bombers, nearly half their members were killed during the war. It was right and fitting to see the Bleuet de France worn proudly today.

York did itself proud with the Remembrance Parade as usual, and it's always a genuine pleasure to see the city's historic ties with the Free French being honoured within the civic party.

And that's important, because she was a working scientist with agency of her own and she collaborated willingly with so much more of that work than is usually mentioned.
Both by Watson AND his critics.
Franklin was a great scientist. Don't sell her short.

Many tellings of her story imply her only involvement was involuntary and without her permission (via the infamous 'Photo 51').
In fact she was MUCH more involved than this, including absolutely bodying one of Watson and Crick's first models because it was chemically inept.

Raising a glass for Rosalind Franklin tonight. James Watson absolutely did her dirty.

Ah, did they heck...
In the words of Wikipedia constant tinkering produced ships with "poor stability, insufficient armor protection, and excessive displacement".
And typically for French vessels it also produced a unified class of three entirely different designs...

Beamier, with a greater displacement, and with the guns back in less-armoured barbettes (the demand for Hoche to have armoured turrets greatly contributed to its issues), the changes naturally fixed all the issues.

Realising that building another three would be unpopular with everybody except France's budding submarine service, the boffins retired to their drawing boards and knocked out the Marceau class.

Hoche was a typical case of too many committees all insisting their favourite features were included, and it's hardly taxing the old noggin to notice that (despite deleting a whole damn deck from the design) it does look rather overloaded.

Now it's fair to say that Hoche's design had some fairly obvious problems. And once everybody stopped screaming they noticed it had some non-obvious ones as well.

Ok, warnings about Blue Sky's moderation settings aside, you might be wondering why the Gallic geniuses are once again managing to offend both physics and the ocular membranes of my more sensitive followers.
Well, it started when they realised how badly they'd screwed it up with Hoche here:

Apparently Blue Sky has some sort of filth filter applied by default, so if you're not seeing this post maybe check your settings.
